Retriever colour variants

Can be these dogs siblings?

labradors

.

The answer is yes; surprisingly, it is possible.

It is proven by diagrams below - the parents of these puppies of Labrador Retriever have black and brown fur colour.

The fur colour is controlled by the production of two main pigments, eumelanin (brown to black) and pheomelanin (light to brown-red, red pigment). The puppy inherits one allele of a given gene from each parent. For the given trait, the animal inherits a pair of alleles of a given gene, one allele from the mother and one allele from the father. In the diagram, the dominant allele is marked with capital letter and the recessive allele with a small letter.

In Labrador Retrievers, three coat colours are permitted according to FCI-standard: black, brown and yellow and tests are performed for locus E (Extension), locus B (Brown) and locus D (Dilution).

In breeds of Flat Coated Retriever, the FCI-standard only recognizes black and brown colours, rarely yellow coat colour may occur.  The yellow fur colour is considered a serious fault in the breed.  With reg ard to the fact that the light colour is inherited recessively, both parents colour ed according to FCI-standards must be carriers of e-allele (genotype E/e). In Flat Coated Retrievers, tests are performed for locus E (Extension) and locus B (Brown).

Curly Coated Retrievers are black or brown, which corresponds to FCI-standard.  Therefore, they are assumed to be EE-genotype and are tested particularly for locus B (Brown) to determine the potential carrier of brown colour.

Tests for all loci mentioned are performed by Genomia laboratory -  continue to place an order and for detailed information:

The price for testing the first locus is 50.00 EUR (33.30 EUR + 16.70 EUR); every other locus of the same sample costs 33.30 EUR. The tests are performed on samples of blood or buccal swabs.

Genomia has prepared a summary of dog breeds carrying all combinations of E and B loci.  There is a complete overview of colours of the offsprings and their probability of occurrence in a litter for the individual colours of the parents.  To display the diagrams, click on the particular item.
