Genome mapping of dog breeds
Dog genome mapping project
We would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in a project to determine the breed from a random sample of a dog.
The project is working towards this outcome by mapping the genomes of dog breeds to determine their individual differences. So far, 273 dog breeds have been mapped and the time is ripe for mapping lesser-known breeds. The breeds that are now next in line can be found in the table below. The project can identify not only purebred dogs (but it is not intended to verify the purity of dogs with pedigrees), but also mixed breeds. It can determine up to 8 breeds in one sample up to three generations of its ancestors.
We hereby ask all fans of dog genetics to collaborate on the project and help us to collect samples. We can reimburse the costs of collecting and sending samples. If you are interested, please contact us at company@genomia.cz.
Genomia has been collaborating on this international project that has been sponsored and funded by the American laboratory and Mars Veterinary Corporation for several years. The goal of the project is to determine the breed of a dog from an unknown sample. The genomes of the individual breeds are being mapped and common features that distinguish the breed from each other looked for. For the project, 25 mucosal swab samples from a single breed need to be collected. Optimally, the dogs should not be directly related. Samples can be provided anonymously; the identity of the dogs' owners is not required. The entire sample will be used for genome mapping purposes, no other tests will be performed on the swab.
The only criterion for the selection of suitable individuals is purebredness. The selected individuals should not be directly related. The more diverse the selected group within the breed, the better.
Project time horizon: sample collection March-April 2022, genome mapping will take about 6-8 months.
