The "ticked" coat pattern of the Abyssinian cat

"Ticked" is the term used for the non-tabby pattern of agouti coat colour found in Abyssinian cats. The individual hairs are striped, but the overall impression is uniform. The patterning is suppressed, so the coat does not have any stripes, blotches, swirls or spots. The fur is darker along the spine and forms an eel stripe.

This phenotype can be caused by two different mutations in the DKK4 gene. These are the missense mutation c.188G>A or the missense mutation c.53C>T, which, in addition to the Abyssinian cat, is also found in the Burmese, Maine Coon and Oriental Shorthair cats.

Both mutations have an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. This means that it only takes one copy of the mutated gene inherited from either parent to show the ticked pattern. The genetic test can clearly reveal the genotype of the animal and is a useful tool for breeders in breeding for the desired phenotype.
