Degenerative Myelopathy in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels 11/2018

Degenerative Myelopathy
Statistical review of the results in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed

In 2017 and 2018, 80 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels from the Czech Republic were tested for Degenerative Myelopathy, mutation c.118G> A in the SOD1 gene. For more information about the disease and testing, please, visit https://www.genomia.com/en/test/dm/

Folowing genotype distribution was found among Cavalier King Charles Spaniels:

  • 14 dogs with normal genotype -> 17.5 %

  • 37 dogs carriers of mutation -> 46.25 %

  • 29 dogs with mutated genotype = dogs at risk of DM development -> 36.25 %

.

Related and unrelated dogs were included in testing set of samples. Number of related dogs increased the rate of carriers. Probably, in the average population of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, the carriers are less represented then in our set of samples. Nevertheless, the mutant allele is significantly spread in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel population.
