Back to allergies and allergy tests

How can we treat the allergy?

The treatment for the allergy must be established by the veterinary that usually take care of your animal or the specialist. The treatment must be individual and it will depend on several agents like: the severity of the process, the period of the year in which the animals presents the symptoms and the duration of them, the age of the animal etc.

To obtain a successful treatment of allergies we must considerate the following factors:

  • We have to identify the responsible allergens of the symptoms and administrate a specific treatment in each case
  • Eliminate or decrease the presence of responsible allergens in the environment (this is very difficult in most cases)
  • Establish the most adequate protocol for the treatment according to the veterinary
  • Make a narrow and continuing collaboration with the owner in the administration of the treatment.

The only treatment that cures the allergy is the inmunotherapy (or allergenic vaccine). This is prepared keeping in mind the clinical history of the animal, the positive allergens in the test, so it is an individual treatment. These allergens are administrated with a subcutaneous injection (under the skin), with increasing concentration in order to get in a medium - large period of time that the immune system of the allergic animal, get used to the contact with allergens, and stops reacting against them.

Genomia provides patients immunotherapy VET-GOID by reputable Nextmune S.L. company. Nextmune S.L. is experienced in allergy diagnostics and treatment for more than 17 years. Vaccines are delivered in about 4-8 weeks.

Nowadays the degree of effectiveness that we can expect is about 95% of the cases with a good improvement of the symptoms or a total recovery. As well, there is a group of animals in which, although the improvement is not so high, the immunotherapy permits in a high way to decrease the corticosteroids doses the patient needs to get a good life quality. Before considering that an hiposensibility treatment does not work, we should wait at least one year. In these cases we must re-evaluate the patient and take a new decision.

Duration of the treatment

The treatment is composed by an initial phase, through injections first weekly and then each fifteen days increasing doses of allergens are injected. This phase takes about 5 months and a week.

The second phase is the maintenance phase, in which are injected monthly the doses without any secondary effect problems, the most efficient one. This dose is called maintenance dose and takes 6 months.

The treatment must be maintained at least one year before making an evaluation of its effectiveness, therefore if we maintain it or not. If the treatment presents an effectiveness in the control of the diseases, we must go on with the treatment for at least 3 or 5 years; although some authors recommends to be used all along their life.

Possible secondary effects

The adverse reactions in the hiposensibilitation treatments are very rare, they are normally an increase of pruritus in the moment of the injection or small local reactions.

These reactions usually happen when there is a change of vial or in some more sensitive animals when they are exposed to the allergens, and these reactions are easily controlled by coming back to the previous dose or giving the animal low doses of corticosteroids. More over, the immunotherapy does not have any secondary effect as others symptomatic treatments as corticosteroids and cyclosporine.
