Allergen Immunotherapy (ASIT)

Targeted treatment for the cause of allergy, not just its symptoms

Allergen Immunotherapy (ASIT) is the only treatment that directly addresses the cause of allergies. Unlike common medications that only suppress symptoms (itching, inflammation, redness), ASIT helps the animal’s body "learn" to tolerate allergens.
.

How ASIT works

Immunotherapy uses precisely defined environmental allergens (such as dust mites, pollen, mold, or epithelia) that trigger an allergic reaction in a specific animal.
These allergens are administered in very small, gradually increasing doses so that the immune system becomes accustomed to them and stops overreacting.
Immunotherapy is not used for food allergies — those are treated through an elimination diet followed by dietary provocation.
ASIT is designed only for inhalant (airborne) allergens, meaning those that the animal breathes in or comes into contact with through the skin.
The goal of ASIT is to induce tolerance — a state in which the animal no longer reacts to normal exposure to the allergen with itching or inflammation.
.

Who is ASIT suitable for?

Immunotherapy is suitable for:

  • Dogs, cats, and horses with confirmed environmental allergies (based on blood or skin testing),
  • Patients with recurring or long-term allergic symptoms,
  • Animals in which conventional treatments (such as antihistamines, corticosteroids, or cyclosporine) do not result in lasting improvement or need to be reduced.

.

Treatment Process

Based on allergy test results, a customized allergen mixture is prepared and administered through subcutaneous injections or, in some protocols, drops into the mouth. Treatment usually lasts for 6 to 12 months, with dose adjustments based on the animal's response.
.

Results and Success Rate

The success rate of ASIT in practice ranges from 70–80%, depending on the type of allergy and individual response.
In most dogs and cats treated with ASIT, the first signs of improvement appear between the 3rd and 6th month of therapy.
The full effect (i.e., stable remission of most clinical symptoms) is usually evaluated after 9–12 months of treatment.
In about one-third of patients, improvement is noticeable only after a longer period (6–12 months).
If no improvement is observed after one year, it is advisable to reassess the therapy (review allergen composition, diagnosis, etc.).
.

Advantages of Immunotherapy

Treats the cause, not just the symptoms.

Safe and well tolerated.
Reduces the need for corticosteroids and other medications.
Provides long-term effects.
Improves quality of life for both the animal and the owner.
