Testing of dogs: Cataract
Cataract in Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
Cataracts are a disease that affects the lens of the eye and causes it to become cloudy. Gradual deterioration of vision is evident in puppies as young as 8 weeks of age. Opaque spots form on the lens of the eye, leading to loss of vision.
The disease is caused by mutation c.2024delG in the FYCO1 gene, which plays an important role in maintaining the homeostasis of the eye.
The genetic test can clearly reveal the genotype of the animal and is a useful tool for breeders to prevent unintentional breeding of affected puppies.
