Curly coat caused by c1 allele
The curly coat caused by c1 allele was originally found in the Portuguese water dog, later it was found that the c1 allele caused curly coat also in many other breeds. The c1 allele in located in the keratin-71 (KRT71) gene, it is a misense mutation c.451C>T. The mutation is inherited autosomal with incomplete dominance. This means that the curly coat will appear in dogs that have inherited the mutated allele from both parents (c1/c1). Heterozygotes (c1/N) will only have wavy coats and dogs not affected by this mutation (N/N) will have straight hair.
